Inaugural Flight
On Sunday, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) launched its inaugural flight from Lahore to Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s efforts to expand its international network.
Flight PK159 was the first of its kind on this new route, which aims to enhance connectivity between Pakistan and Central Asia. The new service reflects the growing diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations, with the intention of boosting tourism, trade, and fostering stronger people-to-people connections.
To commemorate the launch of this new route, a special inauguration ceremony was held at the International Departure Lounge of Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport.
The ceremony was chaired by the Honorable Minister for Defence, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, and attended by the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Pakistan, HE Khazar Farhadov, along with other distinguished guests. The event underscored the importance of this new flight route for strengthening bilateral relations between Pakistan and Azerbaijan.
The airline’s new route to Baku is also seen as a way to cater to the growing interest of Pakistani travelers in Azerbaijan. According to a 2024 report by Azerbaijan’s Trend News Agency, Azerbaijan has become an increasingly popular tourist destination for Pakistanis, with approximately 250,000 Pakistani citizens visiting the country in 2023.
This trend highlights the potential for increased tourism and travel between the two nations, further driving the demand for convenient flight options.
In addition to launching the Lahore-Baku route, PIA has made strides in reviving its operations to Europe. After a four-and-a-half-year hiatus, the airline resumed flights to Europe in January, following the lifting of a ban imposed by EU regulators.
PIA made history by becoming the only carrier to offer direct flights to and from the European Union after the ban was lifted, which was a significant achievement given the airline’s troubled past.
The national carrier had been banned from flying to the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States in 2020 following a series of setbacks, including a tragic crash of an Airbus A-320 in Karachi that resulted in nearly 100 deaths.
The crash, attributed to human error by the pilots and air traffic control, was compounded by allegations that many of the airline’s pilots held dubious or fake licenses. In addition to this, a 2016 crash involving a PIA plane that caught fire after engine failure during a flight from Chitral to Islamabad killed over 40 people, further tarnished the airlineโs reputation.
Despite these challenges, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) lifted the ban in 2023, allowing PIA to return to European skies. However, the airline still faces restrictions in the UK and the United States.
With the new Baku route and improved European operations, PIA is gradually working to rebuild its reputation and expand its international presence, while also contributing to the strengthening of Pakistan’s ties with key international partners.
