ISLAMABAD: Despite the ongoing strike by aircraft engineers, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight operations resumed for the third consecutive day. However, significant disruptions persisted across major airports, causing widespread delays and cancellations.
Flights Cancelled and Delayed Nationwide
According to sources, three domestic flights from Lahore to Karachi and Quetta were cancelled. Meanwhile, 89 flights across the country faced delays in arrivals and departures, some extending up to 13 hours. At Islamabad International Airport, 26 flights were delayed by one to twelve hours.
Severe Delays Reported Across Airports
Similar delays were reported at airports in Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Peshawar, and Skardu, affecting 25 flights. Lahore Airport saw 27 flights delayed by one to thirteen hours, while 11 flights from Karachi experienced delays of up to 11.5 hours.
Engineers Cite Safety and Working Conditions
The engineers have refused to issue aircraft clearance certificates, citing safety concerns and insufficient spare parts. They are also demanding higher salaries and improved working conditions.
PIA Responds with Legal Action
PIA management termed the engineers’ protest a “strike” and announced legal proceedings against those involved. Two senior officials of the Society of Aircraft Engineers of Pakistan (SAEP) have been dismissed. Despite challenges, PIA stated that operations have been partially restored using alternate arrangements, though disruptions remain ongoing.
How to Check Flight Status
Passengers can verify flight schedules via the “Flight Status” section on PIA’s official website or by calling the Contact Center at +92-330-0786-786. Real-time updates are also available on airport websites.
PIA sacks Union Leaders
The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has dismissed Abdullah Jadoon, President of the Society of Aircraft Engineers of Pakistan (SAEP), and Awais Jadoon, its Secretary General, following an intensifying standoff between the airline’s management and engineering staff that has disrupted flight operations in recent days.
According to a notification issued by PIA, both union leaders were terminated from service under the airline’s internal regulations after they failed to appear before the CEO for scheduled hearings on November 4 and 5. The notification added that the dismissals followed formal inquiries initiated last year, with both individuals given “multiple opportunities” to present their case.
