ISLAMABAD: Petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan may increase from October 1, as the federal government considers a proposal by the petroleum industry. The recommendation has been submitted to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and is now under review.
Proposed Increase Across Products
According to industry sources, petrol prices may rise by Rs 2 per litre, while high-speed diesel could increase by Rs 2.48 per litre. The proposal also suggests an upward revision in other fuels. Kerosene oil prices could rise by Rs 4.65 per litre, while light diesel may increase by Rs 1.76 per litre.
Final Decision with Prime Minister
The final approval will come from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, following consultations with the finance ministry. The government is expected to weigh the proposal against its fiscal and public policy considerations before announcing the revised rates.
Current Fuel Prices in Pakistan
At present, the prices of petroleum products stand as follows:
- Petrol (Super): Rs 264.61 per litre
- High-Speed Diesel: Rs 272.77 per litre
Any revision announced on October 1 could affect these rates, making fuel more expensive for consumers.
Economic Impact
If approved, the hike may increase transportation costs, ultimately raising prices of essential goods and services. This comes at a time when inflation already burdens households, adding further pressure on daily budgets.
The government’s upcoming announcement will clarify whether it adopts the proposal or provides partial relief.
