A petition has been submitted in the Karachi District and Sessions Court (East) seeking legal action against Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab and the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town chairman. The move follows the tragic death of a three-year-old boy who fell into an open manhole near Nipa Chowrangi. The incident has sparked public anger and renewed criticism of municipal negligence across the city.
According to reports, the child, identified as Ibrahim, slipped into an uncovered manhole outside a departmental store on Sunday night. Rescue teams recovered his body after 15 hours of search operations. The heartbreaking incident has intensified demands for accountability and immediate action from the city’s administration.
Petition Claims Negligence by Municipal Authorities
The petition was filed by Advocate Abdul Ahad, who argues that the tragedy occurred due to the gross negligence of the relevant municipal authorities. The plea states that officials failed to perform their duties responsibly and did not provide the necessary machinery to address the hazardous condition. It urges the court to direct the SHO of Gulshan-e-Iqbal to register an FIR against the mayor and the town chairman. The petitioner insists that those responsible must face legal consequences to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Lyari Town Orders Emergency Survey of Open Manholes
In response to rising concerns, Lyari Town authorities have initiated strict safety measures. They have ordered an immediate survey of all open and damaged manholes across the area. Instructions have been issued to begin repairs, install lids, and ensure proper safety arrangements without delay. The Municipal Commissioner has directed all union councils to act urgently to safeguard residents, especially children. He called on chairmen, vice chairmen, and councillors to identify dangerous locations and complete repair work at the earliest. A detailed report of uncovered manholes across Lyari Town has been requested within seven days.
The tragic death of young Ibrahim has highlighted the need for prompt and permanent solutions to Karachi’s long-standing infrastructure issues. Public pressure continues to mount as citizens demand safer streets and strict accountability.
