In a groundbreaking development for gender inclusion in Pakistanโs public transport sector, Peshawarโs Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system has inducted its first-ever female driver, marking a significant milestone in promoting womenโs participation in traditionally male-dominated professions.
The trailblazer, Ruth Maryam, is currently undergoing rigorous professional training to operate the cityโs fleet of advanced, eco-friendly buses. Her induction has been widely hailed as a progressive step towards empowering women and challenging societal stereotypes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Originally from Mianwali, Ruth relocated with her family to Wah Cantt at the age of 12 and has been residing in Peshawar for the past seven years. A lifelong enthusiast of motorcycles and cars, she recalls that her passion for driving began at an early age. This interest not only encouraged her to hone her driving skills but also inspired her to set higher goalsโultimately leading her to apply for the BRT driving position.
โI always wanted to drive bigger vehicles, and joining the BRT gave me that opportunity,โ she said. โIโve completed my training and feel proud to be part of this team.โ Ruth added that she never encountered significant personal or social obstacles in pursuing her career choice, expressing gratitude for the encouragement she received from those around her.
Encouraging other women to follow their dreams, she stated: โWomen can do anything. Move forward and achieve your goals without hesitation.โ
Transport officials have praised Ruthโs appointment, noting that her role will inspire other women across the province to explore new career paths in the transport sector.
This achievement follows a similar milestone in Lahore, where Nida Saleh became the first woman to operate the Orange Line Metro Train. After six months of intensive technical training, Nida has now assumed full responsibilities as a train driver.
These developments signal a slow but steady shift towards greater gender inclusivity in Pakistanโs public transportation industry, offering hope and inspiration for aspiring women professionals nationwide.
