On Monday, the PDMA issued a new warning about potential floods in some parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The officials informed that there could be moderate or low levels of floods in the Kabul River in Nowshera from April 7 to 8. They also predicted floods in their tributaries along with the Kohat Toi, Kurram, and Gomal Rivers.
Urban flooding likely in major cities
This advisory was addressed directly to the deputy commissioners of the respective districts. The threat of urban flooding in Peshawar, Mardan, and Nowshera was pointed out in the advisory for this time frame. The concerned local administrations were directed to take preventive measures immediately in order to avoid any loss of life or minimal damage to property, agriculture, or livestock.
The Rescue 1122 and civil defence forces should be on red alert status with all staff and resources available at their disposal, particularly at the hazardous places.
Residents along rivers asked to stay vigilant
The residents living on the banks of the Kabul river and the other rivers flowing into the same were made aware of rising water levels. There are plans by the government to sensitise people about evacuation in case of emergencies; they will provide shelters, food, and medication in safe places. They intend to limit vehicular movement in the low areas adjacent to the rivers and nullahs.
According to the prediction made by the Pakistan Meteorological Department, there will be rains and wind storms with a gap in them between April 6 and 9 in many districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, such as Chitral, Dir, Swat, Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera, Kohat, Bannu, and other areas. There could be snowfall in highland areas.
These warnings came following the heavy rain that caused at least 45 deaths and injuries to 105 others in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since March 25.
