Rain Forecast Raises Flood Concerns in Northern River Regions
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a fresh alert ahead of the 11th spell of monsoon rains, expected to begin on September 16 and continue until September 19. According to the PDMA spokesperson, this upcoming rain spell will primarily impact the upper catchment areas of rivers in Punjab, potentially raising water levels and increasing the risk of localized flooding.
The alert, issued on Sunday, urges commissioners and deputy commissioners across all districts of Punjab to remain on high alert and prepare for possible emergencies. Authorities have been directed to activate contingency plans, ensure drainage systems are operational, and maintain close coordination with rescue teams and local disaster response units.
The PDMA warned that streams and nullahs, especially in vulnerable areas, could overflow due to the anticipated rainfall, leading to flash floods or waterlogging. Specific attention has been drawn to districts with a history of monsoon-related flooding in previous years.
Public Advised to Take Precautionary Measures
The PDMA also issued a public advisory, urging citizens to stay updated on weather alerts and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain. Residents, particularly those living near riverbanks, low-lying areas, or seasonal watercourses, have been cautioned to take precautionary steps to ensure their safety and protect property.
The public has also been advised against visiting riversides and engaging in recreational activities near water bodies during the rainy spell. “Stay safe, stay informed, and cooperate with local authorities in case of any emergency,” the PDMA spokesperson emphasized.
The 11th monsoon spell is part of a longer-than-usual rainy season in Punjab this year, which has already caused damage in several districts through earlier spells.
