The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has handed former national team captain Sarfaraz Ahmed an important new role, placing him in charge of key developmental squads as part of its long-term cricket structure overhaul.
According to sources, Sarfaraz has been appointed to oversee the Pakistan Shaheens and the Pakistan Under-19 teams, giving him direct responsibility for nurturing emerging talent. As part of his new assignment, he will supervise team coaches, review performance structures and monitor player development pathways.
Sarfaraz will also be permitted to travel with both squads on domestic and international tours, ensuring continuity and mentorship. Additionally, he will remain present during training camps and series held within Pakistan, allowing him to provide hands-on guidance to young players.
This appointment marks a strategic move by the PCB to integrate experienced former players into the grooming process of future national stars. Sarfaraz brings extensive leadership credentials to the job: he captained the Pakistan U-19 team to victory in the 2006 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, defeating India in the final. Later, as captain of the senior national side, he led Pakistan to its historic triumph in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, once again defeating India—but this time by a massive 180-run margin.
Sarfaraz’s new developmental role is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s bench depth, enhance skill progression at junior levels and ensure that young cricketers benefit from his experience and understanding of modern international cricket.
