The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former captain Wasim Akram as the brand ambassador of the HBL Pakistan Super League. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced the appointment during a press conference in Lahore, saying Akram will actively promote the PSL both locally and internationally. He added that the cricket legendโs global reputation will strengthen the leagueโs profile and attract greater attention.
Akram will also attend the auction of two new PSL franchises scheduled for January 8 in Islamabad. The PCB expects the ambassadorโs presence to generate enthusiasm among investors and fans alike.
PCB Focused on Upcoming Franchise Auction
Mohsin Naqvi said the PCB has shifted its focus entirely to the upcoming franchise auction. Investors have shown strong interest, reflecting the PSLโs growing commercial appeal. He expressed confidence that both new teams will fetch competitive prices.
The PCB confirmed that 10 parties have qualified to participate in the bidding process after a thorough evaluation. The auction will take place at the Jinnah Convention Centre on January 8. Earlier, the PCB received 12 proposals from potential investors worldwide. The PCB Bid Committee conducted a detailed technical review, eliminating two bidders that did not meet the criteria.
Cities and Ownership Plans for New Franchises
Bidders who succeed at the auction will have the right to choose franchise names from six potential cities: Rawalpindi, Hyderabad, Faisalabad, Gilgit, Muzaffarabad, and Sialkot. Officials said these cities offer strong fan bases and commercial potential.
Naqvi also addressed the Multan Sultans franchise, announcing that the PCB will operate the team during PSL 11. The franchise will be auctioned after the season ends. He clarified that if Ali Tareen wins a new franchise, he will officially become its owner.
PSL Schedule and International Updates
Regarding the tournament schedule, Naqvi said the PCB is considering starting PSL on March 23 instead of March 26. He added that the final decision will be made after consulting all franchise owners to ensure smooth operations.
Naqvi also commented on recent incidents in international cricket. He confirmed the PCB has written to the International Cricket Council concerning the conduct of Indian players during the Under-19 Asia Cup. He emphasized that sportsmanship must be mutual, adding that Pakistan will not insist on handshakes if the opposing team refuses.
With Wasim Akram on board as brand ambassador and the franchise auction approaching, the PCB aims to further elevate the PSLโs global stature. Officials said they view the leagueโs growth as a reflection of Pakistan cricketโs rising influence and commercial strength.
