Pakistan’s top civilian leadership on Thursday reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to defend its sovereignty following heightened tensions along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari warned that the state would respond firmly to any act of aggression.
Leadership signals firm military resolve
The statements came after security forces launched Operation Ghazab-lil-Haq in response to what officials described as unprovoked actions by the Afghan Taliban. According to security sources, Pakistani forces destroyed several militant posts, forcing opposing fighters to retreat from multiple positions.
The prime minister stressed that Pakistan would make no compromise on national defence. He said the armed forces remain fully prepared to protect the country’s territorial integrity and citizens. Moreover, he highlighted the military’s professional capabilities under the leadership of Asim Munir, noting that troops stand ready to counter both internal and external threats.
Shehbaz Sharif added that Pakistan continues to promote peace; however, he warned that national integrity remains non-negotiable. Meanwhile, President Zardari echoed the same message, cautioning that Pakistan’s desire for peace should never be mistaken for weakness.
Ministers warn against further escalation
Senior cabinet members also issued strong reactions. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said Pakistan’s patience had reached its limit and vowed a decisive response to continued hostilities. He argued that Islamabad had consistently supported regional stability but would now defend its security interests more forcefully.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned reported attempts to target civilians, calling the move a serious miscalculation. He praised the armed forces for their swift and effective response.
Officials across the political spectrum reiterated support for the military, emphasizing national unity at a sensitive moment. They also urged the Afghan Taliban to avoid further escalation, warning that Pakistan would protect its borders and citizens at all costs.
