ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar discussed the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza with his Malaysian counterpart, expressing strong support for the Palestinian cause on Monday, according to a statement from Pakistan’s foreign office. This conversation comes amid US President Donald Trump’s controversial suggestion to relocate Gaza’s population to Egypt and Jordan, following his proposal to rebuild Gaza as the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
Earlier, Dar had engaged in discussions with the foreign ministers of Iran and Egypt to rally support for the Palestinians. Trump’s remarks have sparked significant global backlash, particularly from Arab countries, who continue to call for a two-state solution with a sovereign Palestinian state alongside Israel.
During the call with Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Utama Hajji Mohamad bin Hajji Hasan, Dar emphasized Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people. The Pakistani foreign office statement also mentioned Pakistan’s backing for the convening of an Extraordinary OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) meeting to address this urgent issue.
The discussions coincide with the upcoming Arab summit in Egypt, scheduled for February 27, to address the latest developments concerning Palestinian territories.
Humanitarian aid has been flowing into Gaza following a fragile ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, which began on January 19, offering hope for an end to the conflict that has reshaped the region. However, tensions remain high, with Israel insisting on the elimination of Hamas’ military and political power before considering a full withdrawal from Gaza. Hamas, in turn, has stated that it will not release the remaining hostages until Israeli troops leave the territory.
As part of the ceasefire agreement, Hamas has begun releasing Israeli hostages in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners and humanitarian aid, with the eventual goal of a complete Israeli withdrawal and lasting peace.
