First Film School
The Karachi Film School, described as Pakistan’s inaugural institution exclusively dedicated to filmmaking education, has officially opened its doors to students, aiming to provide hands-on experience and practical training. As highlighted by Asadul Haq, the school’s director, the curriculum differs from traditional media sciences programs by offering a condensed one-year diploma focused on filmmaking, directing, cinematography, and acting.
In an interview during the institution’s open house event, Haq emphasized the practical nature of the program, contrasting it with the more extended four-year degrees provided by media sciences schools. He stated that the goal is to equip students with the necessary skills for employment in the industry within a year of completing the program.
The school’s partnership with Studio 146, a prominent collaborator, allows students to work on the studio floor. Additionally, the school facilitates internships with leading industry players, including TV channels, production houses, post-production facilities, and OTT content developers, enhancing students’ exposure to real-world scenarios.
Haq expressed his aspiration to share his extensive 30 years of professional experience with the students, aiming to empower them with practical insights into the filmmaking industry. The school’s Dean, Zara Zaidi, asserted that the institute maintains international standards, aligning its educational offerings with those of global counterparts.
The curriculum includes a one-year diploma program, 25 hours of certificate courses, and a master class featuring three to four hours of intensive learning sessions. The school’s website emphasizes the goal of preparing students for the job market upon graduation.
Students attending the opening event praised the establishment of the Karachi Film School, expressing hope that it would contribute to the growth and development of Pakistan’s cinema industry. Overall, the school aims to bridge the gap between education and industry demands, nurturing a new generation of filmmakers equipped with practical skills and industry insights.
