PESHAWAR: Pakistani security forces responded strongly after Afghan Taliban fighters opened fire along the border in Bajaur district on Monday, security sources said.
The sources confirmed that Taliban militants used both small arms and heavy weapons. They attacked different points in the border area. Pakistani troops retaliated immediately and vigorously. They silenced the enemy fire and destroyed several Afghan posts from where the shooting was coming.
Local officials made it clear that Pakistan only targeted the posts that were actively firing. No civilian areas were hit.
Operation Ghazab lil-Haq to Continue
The Foreign Office said on Thursday that the temporary pause in Operation Ghazab lil-Haq during Eidul Fitr has now ended. Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said the operation will carry on โuntil its objectives are achieved.โ
The military launched the operation on February 26. This came after repeated unprovoked attacks from the Afghan side.
Relations between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban have been at an all-time low since the group took power four years ago. Last year, heavy border clashes broke out along the 2,600-kilometre frontier. Turkiye and Qatar tried to mediate. However, the talks in Doha produced only a fragile ceasefire with no lasting solution.
This latest exchange of fire shows how tense the situation remains along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
