Pakistani diplomats stationed at the High Commission in New Delhi are reportedly facing harassment, with at least four receiving eviction notices for their private rented residences before the expiry of their lease agreement.
According to diplomatic sources, the affected diplomats have been subjected to constant surveillance, along with intermittent cuts to their gas and internet services. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has also delayed extending visas for 17 Pakistani officials, including diplomats, a request initially submitted three to five months ago.
Tensions have further escalated after the water supply to the Pakistani High Commission was cut off, and delivery of Indian newspapers to the mission was halted for over six weeks. The High Commission has lodged a formal complaint with Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The alleged harassment comes in the wake of a brief but intense armed confrontation between Pakistan and India in May. The conflict began when India conducted cross-border strikes into Pakistan, claiming to target militants linked to the Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
In retaliation, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, downing six Indian Air Force fighter jets — including three Rafales — and conducting its own strikes. The 87-hour conflict left 40 civilians and 13 armed forces personnel martyred in Pakistan.
Amid the standoff, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government announced it would suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) with Pakistan. However, the Permanent Court of Arbitration has since ruled that India must allow the waters of the western rivers to flow freely for Pakistan’s unrestricted use.
