Pakistan has called on the United Nations Security Council to hold Israel accountable for its attacks on Qatar, warning that such aggression undermines international peace and threatens the security of all states.
At an emergency meeting of the 15-member Council on the Middle East, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, strongly condemned the recent Israeli strikes. He emphasized that the assault was an “illegal and unprovoked act” targeting a residential neighborhood in Qatar, deliberately endangering civilians and breaching international humanitarian law.
Pakistan’s Call for Accountability
Ambassador Ahmad urged the Security Council to move beyond symbolic condemnation and take concrete measures against Israel’s “reckless and provocative actions.” He stressed that mediators involved in peace negotiations must be protected, and that the central role of international law and the UN Charter must be reaffirmed to safeguard global security.
The meeting was requested by Pakistan, Algeria, and Somalia and was convened under the presidency of South Korea for September.
Solidarity With Qatar
Reiterating Pakistan’s solidarity with Qatar, Ambassador Ahmad declared that the country fully supports Qatar’s right to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He noted that under the UN Charter, Qatar has the inalienable right to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of its citizens and its borders.
“This brazen assault is not an isolated act,” Ahmad said. “It is part of a broader pattern of Israeli aggression that consistently undermines regional peace and stability.”
Israeli Actions in Broader Context
The envoy highlighted that Israel’s latest actions fit into a long record of destabilizing behavior. He pointed to repeated Israeli military campaigns in Gaza, as well as cross-border strikes in Syria, Lebanon, Iran, and Yemen. According to him, each of these incidents represents a violation of both the UN Charter and international humanitarian law.
“Such reckless acts erode the primacy of international law and breed a culture of impunity,” Ahmad warned. He cited UN General Assembly Resolution 3314, which defines aggression as a grave threat to international security.
Regional and Global Implications
Pakistan cautioned that continued impunity for Israel’s actions could set a dangerous precedent for the international community. The envoy stressed that unchecked aggression destabilizes the Middle East and poses risks that extend far beyond the region.
He called on member states to recognize the urgency of preventing further escalation, insisting that international law must not be selectively applied. Upholding the rule of law, he argued, is essential for protecting smaller states and maintaining peace worldwide.
Pakistan’s warning at the UN underscores its position that Israeli aggression against Qatar cannot be viewed in isolation. Instead, it reflects a broader policy of destabilization that threatens not only the Middle East but also the stability of the entire international system. By urging accountability and protection for peace mediators, Pakistan is pressing the global community to act before further violence undermines the foundations of international security.
