PM Shehbaz Directs Simplicity Across Government
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the federal government will unveil a comprehensive austerity and savings plan on Monday, in response to the ongoing global fuel crisis triggered by the USโIsraelโIran conflict.
The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by the premier on Sunday. Officials briefed him on the economic impact of rising international tensions, particularly on energy supply and fluctuating global fuel prices. The government has already raised petrol and diesel prices by Rs55 per litre, reflecting the strain on domestic energy costs.
PM Shehbaz emphasized that all ministers, federal and provincial representatives, and government employees must adopt simplicity and austerity in their daily operations. The directive aims to ensure efficient resource utilization and public relief during challenging economic times.
The prime minister stated that once the difficult phase passes, the government will provide maximum possible relief to the public. He stressed that austerity measures would not apply to the industrial or agricultural sectors to protect national production, exports, and food security.
Economic Measures and Strategic Planning
During the meeting, several proposals based on austerity and simplicity were reviewed in detail. Officials highlighted the importance of energy management, careful fuel usage, and monitoring of demand and supply through IT systems. These measures aim to prevent waste of government resources and ensure timely decision-making by relevant institutions.
The prime minister also stressed that the burden of austerity should be shared fairly. He urged the privileged and elite classes to set an example by voluntarily making necessary adjustments. This approach is intended to reinforce public confidence and ensure social cohesion during economic challenges.
The briefing noted that Pakistan currently has adequate reserves of diesel, petrol, and other petroleum products. Arrangements have been made to address emergency situations if fuel supply is disrupted due to global instability.
Chief secretaries from all four provinces provided detailed updates on economic activities, energy consumption, and administrative preparedness. The collaborative approach reflects the governmentโs intention to maintain national stability while managing resources prudently.
Cabinet Coordination and Public Relief Focus
The meeting was attended by senior federal ministers, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, and others. Special assistants and top officials from relevant departments also attended.
PM Shehbaz reiterated that the governmentโs priority is protecting public interests while safeguarding economic stability. All government representatives were instructed to ensure efficient utilization of resources and contribute actively to relief measures.
The austerity plan will formally be announced on Monday. It is expected to outline specific cost-cutting measures, energy conservation protocols, and guidelines for ministers and employees to adopt frugal practices. The plan aims to strengthen the economy while ensuring continuity of essential services.
Officials emphasized that careful execution of the plan is crucial as global fuel prices remain volatile. The recent surge, fueled by geopolitical conflicts, has placed additional pressure on Pakistanโs economy, making strategic planning and austerity measures necessary.
This government-wide initiative is seen as a proactive step to stabilize the economy, maintain public confidence, and ensure that resources are used effectively during a period of heightened international uncertainty.
