Pakistan’s mystery spinner Usman Tariq has found himself at the center of controversy after fans questioned the legality of his bowling action during the third and final T20I against South Africa. The incident occurred in the 10th over of the Proteas innings, where Tariq was seen gaining sharp spin while seemingly straightening his arm beyond the allowed limit.
A video clip of the delivery — a 94.1 km/h full toss bowled to Donovan Ferreira — went viral on social media, with fans accusing the spinner of “chucking.”
Many expressed frustration over the match officials’ inaction, as no no-ball was called. The lack of response from umpires sparked widespread criticism, with several users tagging the International Cricket Council (ICC) and demanding an official review.
“This is chucking, visible to the naked eye. I’m amazed how umpires allowed this,” one user posted, recalling that Tariq had earlier been reported for a suspect action during the Pakistan Super League (PSL). He was later cleared after undergoing a bowling action review.
Usman Tariq, who made his T20I debut in the ongoing series, defended himself by explaining that his arm’s unusual movement is due to a medical condition. “I do have two elbows in my arm. My arm bends naturally. I got it tested and cleared. Everyone feels I bend my arms, but it’s a biological issue,” he said in an earlier interview with MYK Sports.
Tariq passed biomechanical testing at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore earlier this year, allowing him to continue bowling without restrictions. While some fans continue to question his technique, others have come to his defense, noting that experts have cleared his action.
Despite the controversy, Pakistan clinched the three-match T20I series 2-1 against South Africa and will now face them in the ODI series starting November 4.
