Pakistan marked a historic milestone in its energy sector on Wednesday with the arrival of its first-ever shipment of US crude oil. The cargo, consisting of one million barrels of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude, was carried by MT Pegasus, the largest oil tanker ever to dock at a Pakistani port. This shipment comes nearly three months after Pakistan and the United States signed a landmark trade agreement aimed at strengthening bilateral economic cooperation.
The vessel departed from Houston, Texas, on September 14 and completed its transoceanic voyage to Cnergyico’s Single Point Mooring (SPM) facility in Hub, Balochistan. Cnergyico successfully handled the historic import under the new Pakistan-US trade framework, underscoring the growing energy partnership between the two nations.
A spokesperson for Cnergyico announced that the first shipment is only the beginning: a second US crude cargo is expected in mid-November, with a third shipment planned for 2026, signaling a long-term collaboration in the energy sector. The arrival of MT Pegasus not only represents a strategic step in Pakistan-US trade relations but also sets a record in the country’s maritime history.
The trade agreement, finalized on July 31, 2025, seeks to deepen economic ties, enhance market access, attract investment, and strengthen cooperation in key sectors such as energy, minerals, information technology, and cryptocurrency. Under the agreement, tariffs—especially on Pakistani exports to the US—are set to be reduced, fostering a fresh phase of economic collaboration between Islamabad and Washington.
US President Donald Trump highlighted the development on his Truth Social account, noting: “We have just concluded a deal with the country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive oil reserves. We are in the process of choosing the oil company that will lead this partnership.”
With this historic delivery, Pakistan’s energy sector takes a significant step forward, signaling the start of a new era in bilateral trade and economic cooperation with the United States.
