ISLAMABAD: Islamabad on Friday reiterated its firm and consistent support for Beijing on the Taiwan issue, reaffirming its commitment to the One-China principle amid heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait. The statement came as China concluded large-scale military exercises near the self-governed island.
Responding to media queries, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi said Pakistan and China share an iron-clad friendship and remain all-weather strategic cooperative partners. He emphasized that Pakistanโs position on Taiwan has not changed and continues to align fully with Beijingโs stance on the matter.
According to Andrabi, Pakistan consistently supports China on issues related to its core national interests. He added that Taiwan remains a key component of those interests. โWe reiterate our consistent support to China on all matters of its core interests, including Taiwan,โ the spokesperson said.
He further stated that Pakistan will continue to strictly adhere to the One-China principle and considers Taiwan an inalienable part of China. As a result, Islamabad does not recognize Taiwan as a separate or independent entity and supports a peaceful resolution in line with international norms and Chinaโs sovereignty claims.
The statement followed Chinaโs recent military drills around Taiwan, which have drawn international attention and concern. Beijing announced late on Wednesday that it had completed the exercises but stressed that its armed forces would remain on high alert. Chinese authorities said they would continue to enhance combat readiness in response to what they described as external provocations.
China, which claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, has repeatedly warned against any moves it perceives as supporting Taiwanese independence. Moreover, Beijing has not ruled out the use of force to bring the island under its control if necessary.
The latest exercises, named โJustice Mission 2025,โ involved the firing of dozens of rockets and the deployment of a significant number of warships and aircraft near Taiwan. Analysts say the drills aimed to send a strong deterrent message amid evolving regional dynamics.
Meanwhile, Pakistanโs reaffirmation underscores its long-standing diplomatic alignment with China, particularly on sensitive geopolitical issues. Consequently, Islamabadโs position reflects continuity in its foreign policy approach toward its closest strategic partner.
