ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways has offered passengers a rare opportunity to experience travel through its historic luxury Minister and Chairman Saloons. These Saloons once were once reserved exclusively for government officials and British officers.
The opulent coaches are now available for public rental on routes connecting Rawalpindi to Lahore, Karachi, and other major destinations.
Historic Luxury Meets Modern Comfort
The Minister Saloon, often described as a โpalace on wheels,โ features two teakwood-decorated coaches with bedrooms, a drawing hall, a dining area, staff quarters, and a fully equipped kitchen including a stove, refrigerator, and microwave.
Modern amenities such as air-conditioning, heaters, television, and internet ensure a comfortable journey. While part of the saloon serves as a formal living room, other sections accommodate four or more passengers in well-appointed bedrooms. Green curtains, vintage lighting, and traditional fans preserve the historic charm of the carriages, blending heritage with contemporary convenience.
Popularity and Rental Details
Officials maintain the saloons at a dedicated shed in Rawalpindi Railway Station and at the Pakistan Carriage Factory. Superintendent Nooruddin Darwar said the renovated carriages are growing in popularity, with attendants provided during journeys. Saloons are attached to Green Line trains bound for Karachi and LahoreโIslamabad trains according to demand.
Ticket prices for trips range from Rs50,000 to Rs190,000 depending on the distance traveled. Although the Prime Ministerโs Saloons remain off-limits, the Minister and Chairman Saloons allow passengers to enjoy the grandeur of Pakistan Railwaysโ heritage. The initiative combines history, luxury, and comfort, giving travelers a unique way to experience the railwayโs historic legacy while enjoying modern conveniences.
