The government of Pakistan has announced major changes to the education system and public sector operations. The measures come as part of a national austerity plan introduced during rising regional tensions and economic pressure.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif revealed the new steps during a televised address to the nation. He said the government must adopt strict financial and administrative measures to manage the current situation.
Under the new policy, all universities and higher education institutions across Pakistan will switch to online classes starting March 10. Meanwhile, schools will observe a two-day weekly holiday for the next two weeks.
The prime minister said the measures are necessary due to increasing global oil prices, security concerns, and the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
He described the region as facing a severe warlike situation that could impact global stability and energy markets.
Universities Shift to Online Learning
Pakistanโs higher education institutions will temporarily move their academic activities online. The decision affects universities and other institutions operating under the countryโs higher education system.
Officials say the change aims to reduce travel, fuel consumption, and operational costs.
Online classes will allow students to continue their studies while limiting physical attendance on campuses. Universities are expected to use digital platforms to deliver lectures and academic content.
Education authorities have asked institutions to ensure that students receive uninterrupted learning opportunities.
Meanwhile, schools across the country will observe a two-day weekly holiday beginning at the end of the current week. The extended weekend schedule will remain in place for two weeks.
Officials say the policy will help reduce transport usage and operational expenses during the austerity period.
Government Announces Nationwide Cost-Cutting Measures
The education changes are part of a broader austerity plan announced by the prime minister.
Under the new policy, fuel use for government vehicles will be cut by 50 percent for the next two months. In addition, about 60 percent of official vehicles will remain off the road during this period.
Government employees will also see changes to their working arrangements. Half of the federal government workforce will work from home.
Only essential staff will report to offices. Government departments will operate on a four-day workweek to save resources.
The government has also announced restrictions on spending across departments.
Purchases of vehicles, furniture, and air conditioners by government institutions have been banned. Officials say the move will help control unnecessary spending.
In addition, official banquets, government dinners, and public Iftar gatherings will not be held during the austerity period.
Authorities have also instructed departments to hold seminars and meetings in government buildings rather than expensive hotels.
Ministers and Officials Face Pay Cuts
The austerity plan also includes financial sacrifices from political leaders.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that federal cabinet members will give up their salaries for two months.
Members of parliament will also see a reduction in their income. According to the plan, their salaries will be reduced by 25 percent during the austerity period.
In addition, official foreign trips by ministers, provincial chief ministers, and governors have been suspended for two months.
The government says these measures will help reduce spending during a time of economic pressure and global uncertainty.
Officials believe the steps will also demonstrate solidarity with citizens facing rising costs of living.
The prime minister urged the nation to support the governmentโs efforts to stabilize the economy and maintain national security during challenging times.
