ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is currently in the grip of a severe cold wave, with icy conditions prevailing across the nation. Snow blankets the mountainous regions, creating stunning but frigid scenery.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts that the cold wave will persist until December 15, with most areas experiencing harsh cold and dry weather today.
In the northern regions, lakes and waterfalls in Ghizar have frozen solid, while popular tourist destinations such as Malam Jabba, Kalam, Kaghan, and Shogran are buried under a thick layer of snow.
In Karachi, cold winds have intensified the chill, dropping early morning temperatures to 12 degrees Celsius, with forecasts suggesting they could dip into single digits.
Recent temperature readings highlight the extremity of the cold: Leh recorded a bone-chilling minus 13 degrees, while Skardu and Gupis saw minus 7 degrees. Kalam and Qalat registered minus 6 degrees, and Dir and Malam Jabba reported minus 4 degrees.
Light rain and additional snowfall are expected in Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and adjacent hilly areas. Meanwhile, light fog is anticipated during the morning in the plains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, southern Punjab, and upper Sindh.
The Chief Meteorologist has also announced that a rain system is likely to form in early January, although it is expected to bring below-average rainfall.
