The United Statesโ newly unveiled trade policy for South Asia has taken a comparatively softer stance towards Pakistan, offering the country significant concessions in contrast to its regional neighbors, India and Bangladesh, who face stricter trade penalties.
Among the three major South Asian nations, Pakistan has emerged as the most favored, with the Trump administration imposing a 19% retaliatory tariff on Pakistani exports. In comparison, India faces a 25% tariff, while Bangladesh has been hit with a 20% duty.
The White House released a comprehensive list of countries affected by the revised tariff regime. Several others, including Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Taiwan, have also been subjected to a 20% tariffโequal to Bangladeshโs rate. In contrast, Afghanistan, Israel, and Turkey have been levied a 15% tariff.
More severe tariffs have been imposed on a range of countries:
- South Africa โ 30%
- Switzerland โ 39%
- Myanmar and Laos โ 40%
- Syria โ the highest, at 41%
- Nicaragua โ 18%
- Canada โ increased from 25% to 35%
- UK and Brazil โ 10%
According to the White House, these new tariffs took immediate effect. However, Mexico has been granted a 90-day grace period to finalize a trade deal, after which higher tariffs may be enforced if an agreement is not reached.
Analysts view the preferential treatment for Pakistan as a strategic decision reflecting recent diplomatic engagements, shifting regional dynamics, and the U.S.โs broader geopolitical calculations. Experts believe this concession marks a diplomatic success for Pakistan and presents a valuable opportunity to boost its economy.
This development follows a series of high-level diplomatic interactions, including a meeting between Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and President Trump; discussions between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio; and meetings involving Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb with senior U.S. officials.
Adding to the momentum, President Trump recently announced on Twitter the signing of a new trade agreement between the United States and Pakistan, further reinforcing the improving bilateral ties.
