Pakistanโs campaign in the ICC Womenโs World Cup came to an unfortunate end after their crucial encounter against England was abandoned due to persistent rain at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday. The result eliminated Pakistan from semi-final contention despite a determined bowling display that had kept the match finely poised.
Chasing a revised target of 113 in 31 overs after rain interruptions, Pakistan appeared well set at 33 for no loss in six overs when showers returned to the venue.
The rain intensified, leaving no possibility of a resumption, and the match was ultimately called off. With no reserve days available for league-stage games, both teams were awarded one point each.
The outcome left Pakistan anchored at the bottom of the table with just one point from four matches, while England retained their position at the top with seven points from as many outings. Even if Pakistan were to win their remaining three fixtures, their maximum possible tally of seven points would be insufficient to secure a semi-final berth.
Earlier, England, sent in to bat in a rain-curtailed 31-over game, managed 133 for nine. All-rounder Charlie Dean top-scored with 33 off 51 balls, including three boundaries, as Pakistanโs bowlers applied consistent pressure.
Skipper Fatima Sana produced a standout performance, claiming four wickets for just 27 runs in her six overs. She was ably supported by Sadia Iqbal, who took two wickets, while Diana Baig and Rameen Shamim picked up one each.
Despite the disappointment, Pakistanโs spirited bowling display offered glimpses of promise amid an otherwise luckless campaign. The Green Shirts will now look to finish their World Cup journey on a high note when they face New Zealand at the same venue on Saturday, while England will meet co-hosts India in Indore on Sunday.
