ISLAMABAD: In a strategic diplomatic push, Pakistan has sent a high-level delegation to Moscow, led by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, Syed Tariq Fatemi, to present Islamabad’s stance on recent regional developments and promote peace through dialogue.
The Moscow visit is part of a wider diplomatic initiative launched by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif aimed at countering what Pakistan describes as India’s “aggressive and irresponsible posture” on the global stage. Simultaneously, a separate multi-party delegation headed by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman and former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has embarked on visits to key Western capitals, including New York, Washington D.C., London, and Brussels.
Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan said the delegation to Russia will engage with senior Russian officials, policy experts, and media outlets to underline Pakistan’s “peaceful and responsible position” in contrast to India’s recent actions.
“The goal is to mobilise international support for Pakistan’s call for peace and diplomacy, and to encourage de-escalation in South Asia,” the spokesperson said.
The delegation led by Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari includes notable political figures and seasoned diplomats: Dr Mosaddiq Malik, Senator Sherry Rehman, Hina Rabbani Khar, Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan, Syed Faisal Ali Sabzwari, Bushra Anjum Butt, former foreign secretaries Jalil Abbas Jilani and Tehmina Janjua.
Both delegations will engage with government officials, legislators, think tanks, international media, and members of the Pakistani diaspora. A central theme of their outreach is the urgent need for constructive international engagement to maintain regional stability.
The delegations will also highlight issues such as the Indus Waters Treaty, urging its immediate restoration to full and fair implementation in accordance with its original terms.
