Large-Scale Imports
In a decisive move to tackle the artificial surge in sugar prices and stabilize the market, the federal government of Pakistan has launched a comprehensive nationwide crackdown on sugar hoarders and market manipulators.
According to senior officials, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has authorized an aggressive operation aimed at rooting out elements involved in hoarding, cartelization, and speculative pricing practices that have contributed to the recent price hike in the essential commodity.
The operation will be carried out under the joint coordination of key government institutions, including the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
These agencies have been directed to conduct raids, arrest culprits, and impose strict penalties without discrimination. โNo one involved in distorting the sugar market will be spared,โ a senior government source stated, underscoring the prime ministerโs firm stance on the issue.
To further counter the price manipulation and ensure market stability, the government has also moved to increase the domestic supply of sugar through large-scale imports.
In a high-level review meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, which included the minister for food security and representatives from the FIA and FBR, it was decided to propose to the federal cabinet the import of 250,000 metric tons of raw sugar.
Additionally, in-principle approval has been granted for the import of 500,000 metric tonnes of refined sugar, which will be processed through the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC).
The aim of these imports is to alleviate pressure on local markets, improve availability, and mitigate further volatility in sugar pricesโparticularly ahead of the upcoming monsoon season and religious festivities, when consumption typically increases.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized the governmentโs resolve to protect both consumers and producers. โOur foremost priority is to ensure the availability of essential commodities at fair prices. We will not allow anyone to exploit the market at the expense of ordinary citizens,โ he said during the meeting.
Following the official directives, relevant enforcement bodies have already begun intensifying field operations. Reports suggest that major arrests and seizures are imminent as authorities crack down on illegal stockpiling and price manipulation.
The governmentโs actions are being widely seen as a crucial step to restore order in the sugar market, enhance price transparency, and prevent future economic exploitation by vested interests.
