President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday conferred Pakistan’s highest civilian award, the Nishan-e-Pakistan, upon Jordan’s King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein in recognition of his contributions to regional and global peace.
The award ceremony took place at the Aiwan-e-Sadr (President’s House) following a luncheon hosted by President Zardari, which was attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and other senior officials.
During the ceremony, King Abdullah II reciprocated by conferring the Wisam al-Nahdah al-Mursa, also known as the Bejewelled Grand Cordon of Al Nahdah, upon President Zardari. This prestigious honour is typically awarded to heads of state and distinguished dignitaries in recognition of their contributions to peace, diplomacy, and bilateral cooperation.
Prior to the investiture, President Zardari and King Abdullah held a bilateral meeting to discuss regional and international developments, with a particular focus on peace and security in the Middle East.
Both leaders underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation in multilateral forums and advancing humanitarian initiatives.
King Abdullah II highlighted the deep-rooted ties between Jordan and Pakistan and expressed Jordan’s interest in expanding collaboration across multiple sectors. The two leaders also agreed to maintain close coordination on bilateral, regional, and global issues.
A key topic of discussion was the ongoing situation in Gaza and the broader Palestinian issue. President Zardari and King Abdullah reiterated their strong support for a two-state solution, emphasizing the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on pre-June 1967 borders with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
They firmly rejected any proposals involving the displacement of Palestinians. Their stance comes in response to recent statements by Israeli officials, including Defence Minister Israel Katz and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who have opposed the creation of a Palestinian state.
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Federal Minister for Climate Change Senator Musadik Malik, the Foreign Ministry Secretary, and ambassadors from both countries, highlighting the importance Pakistan and Jordan place on diplomatic and strategic collaboration.
