Recognition for Advancing Defence Ties and Regional Security
Pakistan has awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military), one of the nation’s highest military honours, to General Michael E. Kurilla, the commander of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM). The award acknowledges his remarkable contributions to strengthening defence cooperation between Pakistan and the United States and his efforts in promoting regional peace and stability.
The award was presented during a formal ceremony at the Aiwan-e-Sadr (Presidency) in Islamabad, where President Asif Ali Zardari conferred the honour. The event was attended by senior civil and military leaders, reflecting the significance of the moment. In an official statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) described General Kurilla’s recognition as a tribute to his “outstanding contributions to regional security and his dedicated efforts in strengthening strategic defence ties between the two countries.”
Deepening Bilateral Cooperation and Counterterrorism Efforts
ISPR highlighted that under General Kurilla’s leadership, Pakistan-US military collaboration has witnessed significant growth. His role has been instrumental in fostering mutual trust, enhancing defence cooperation, and deepening joint efforts against terrorism. These efforts have not only reinforced operational coordination but also reaffirmed Pakistan’s standing as a vital strategic partner in maintaining regional security.
During his recent visit to Pakistan, General Kurilla held extensive meetings with President Zardari and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. The discussions reportedly focused on regional security dynamics, military-to-military engagement, and joint responses to transnational threats. ISPR further stated, “General Kurilla’s visionary leadership reflects a profound respect for Pakistan’s strategic importance and its ongoing contributions to global peace efforts.”
As a mark of honour, General Kurilla was also presented with a Tri-Services Guard of Honour upon his arrival at the Presidency, symbolising the deep respect and gratitude of the Pakistani military establishment for his efforts in building stronger ties between the two nations.
