Pakistan’s cricket team management has decided not to recall former captain Babar Azam and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan for the upcoming T20 series against South Africa, reliable sources confirmed on Wednesday.
Instead, Salman Ali Agha will continue to lead the side, signaling the management’s intent to maintain continuity and test new combinations ahead of future tournaments.
According to insiders, Salman Ali Agha will also promote himself to the crucial number three batting position, aimed at stabilizing the innings and providing momentum in the middle overs. Sources added that the selectors and management remain satisfied with his leadership and consider him a potential long-term option for T20 captaincy.
In a separate development, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has finalized the coaching and management staff for the upcoming Test series against South Africa. Azhar Mahmood has been appointed head coach, while Naveed Akram Cheema will serve as team manager.
The support staff includes Imran Farhat as batting coach, Abdul Rehman as spin bowling coach, and Abdul Majeed as fielding coach. This revamped setup aims to rejuvenate Pakistan’s Test strategy and performance.
The two-match Test series will begin on October 12 at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, followed by the second Test at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium starting October 20. The series forms an important part of Pakistan’s preparations for the upcoming World Test Championship cycle.
Sources revealed that the selection committee recently met in Lahore to evaluate player performances following the Asia Cup. Discussions centered on improving team balance and addressing recent weaknesses.
While Babar Azam’s possible return to the T20 squad was discussed, some selectors preferred delaying it. Salman Ali Agha’s leadership and batting were also reviewed, with management exploring tactical adjustments to strengthen Pakistan’s T20 setup against the visiting Proteas.
