Pakistan and Iran have pledged to strengthen their long-standing relationship and enhance cooperation on key regional and international matters, the Foreign Office said on Tuesday. The commitment came during a high-level meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Dr Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, who is currently on an official visit to Pakistan.
High-Level Meetings Aim to Boost Strategic Cooperation
Ishaq Dar and Dr Ali Larijani discussed expanding collaboration across multiple fields while reaffirming the importance of maintaining close political, security, and economic ties. The visit comes at a crucial time, as both nations respond to rapidly evolving regional dynamics.
A day earlier, Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam described Dr Larijani’s trip as vital for elevating the “time-tested” Pakistan–Iran relationship to a new strategic phase. In a post on X, the ambassador stressed the need for stronger cooperation given the shifting global environment and emerging challenges in the region.
He noted that the visit aims to meaningfully advance a comprehensive strategy for boosting bilateral ties.
Dr Larijani, in an Urdu-language post on X, also praised Pakistan’s solidarity during Iran’s difficult moments. He wrote, “The Iranian people will never forget that during the 12-day war imposed on Iran by the US and the Zionist regime, the Pakistani nation stood with the Iranian nation.”
He added that Pakistan and Iran remain two important countries for ensuring sustainable regional security and that Iran prioritises fostering brotherly relations with neighbouring states.
Deep-Rooted Relations Strengthened by Recent Events
Pakistan’s Ambassador to Iran, Muhammad Mudassir Tipu, welcomed Dr Larijani’s visit, calling it part of an ongoing series of high-level interactions between the leadership of both countries. He said the trip would further strengthen the historical and deeply rooted bond between Islamabad and Tehran.
Pakistan consistently supported Iran during the 12-day conflict with Israel in June, when Israeli airstrikes targeted Iranian scientists and military officials. Iran retaliated with ballistic missile strikes on Israeli cities. Weeks later, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif played a significant role in facilitating the Iran–Israel ceasefire.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian later thanked PM Shehbaz in a phone call, appreciating Pakistan’s principled and unwavering stance in support of Tehran.
As Dr Larijani’s visit continues, both nations appear committed to strengthening cooperation in security, diplomacy, and regional stability, signaling a renewed momentum in Pakistan–Iran relations.
