ISLAMABAD: The federal government today extended the tenure of Pakistan Air Force chief and also issued a notification about the appointment of Field Marshal Asim Munir as the Commander of Defence Forces.
The Ministry of Defence today issued the notification, confirming the appointment of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as the Chief of Defense Forces. The government also extended the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu by two years.
Officials issued both notifications after receiving presidential approval on the prime minister’s recommendation. The ministry confirmed that Munir will serve a five-year term under the Army Act and Article 243 of the Constitution.
Air Chief Marshal Sidhu Gets Two-Year Extension
In a separate notification, the Ministry of Defense extended the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu. The extension will take effect on March 19, 2026. The decision was issued under Article 234 of the Constitution and the Pakistan Air Force Act. Authorities circulated copies of both notifications to the President, Prime Minister, service chiefs and relevant institutions to ensure formal compliance.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar welcomed the appointment of Syed Asim Munir. He said the development strengthens Pakistan’s defense structure by creating unified command across all forces. He stated that Pakistan’s enemies will now act with greater caution. Tarar added that the unified command enhances coordination and improves operational readiness. He emphasised that the new structure supports national security during complex regional challenges.
Minister Warns Against Rumors and Misinformation
Tarar also addressed misinformation spreading across social and electronic media. He urged those spreading rumors about the appointment process to retract their claims. He said responsible reporting is vital during matters of national interest. The minister stressed that false information creates confusion and harms public trust. He urged media outlets to verify all details before publishing sensitive news.
