The opposition alliance, Movement for the Protection of the Constitution of Pakistan, formally launched its street mobilisation campaign on Thursday as its convoy departed from Islamabad for Lahore.
The convoy is being led by senior opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai and marks the beginning of a three-day public outreach tour aimed at defending constitutional values and building public support.
Speaking to the media before departure, Achakzai said the movementโs objective was peaceful and democratic. โWe have not come out to conquer anyone or throw stones. Our aim is to protect the constitution and raise our voice against oppression,โ he said. He announced a nationwide call for protests and political activities on February 28.
Achakzai also revealed plans for a shutter-down strike on February 8, during which public transport, including buses and trucks, would remain off the roads. He said the strike would allow people to demonstrate their collective strength across the country.
The convoy, comprising a large number of vehicles, has been receiving warm receptions at various locations along the route. Several key leaders of the opposition alliance are accompanying Achakzai, including Moin Qureshi, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar and former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser.
Upon arrival in Lahore, the opposition leaders plan to meet political and social figures, with several prominent personalities expected to announce their support for the movement.
According to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf sources, Achakzai also intends to visit the Punjab Assembly and seek meetings with jailed leaders Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Yasmin Rashid and Mian Mahmood Rashid at Kot Lakhpat Jail.
The movementโs spokesperson said the campaign aims to restore the constitution and safeguard democracy, calling it the beginning of a broader effort to unite the public against oppression.
Authorities have made tight security arrangements in Lahore, while reports of raids and arrests of opposition activists have emerged. The alliance has also condemned the 27th Constitutional Amendment and vowed protests nationwide.
