OpenAI is rolling out a new safety feature in ChatGPT that predicts whether a user is under 18 by analysing behaviour on the platform, automatically applying stricter content safeguards without relying on self-reported age checkboxes.
According to TechCrunch, the company has introduced an age prediction system that uses behavioural and account-level signals to identify accounts likely belonging to minors. These signals include a user’s stated age, the length of time an account has existed and usage patterns such as the time of day ChatGPT is accessed.
Stricter safeguards for younger users
When the system flags an account as belonging to a user under 18, ChatGPT will automatically switch that account to a more restricted experience. As a result, additional protections will limit exposure to content related to sex, violence and other material considered unsuitable for minors.
OpenAI has previously said it plans to tailor ChatGPT experiences based on age, defaulting to safer settings when it cannot confidently determine whether a user is an adult. This latest step formalises that approach by relying on algorithmic signals rather than user declarations alone.
The move comes as governments and regulators worldwide increase pressure on technology companies to strengthen protections for children and teenagers. Concerns have grown as artificial intelligence tools become more widely used in schools, homes and social settings.
Global rollout and adult mode plans
Reuters reported that OpenAI is rolling out the age prediction system globally as it prepares to launch an “adult mode” for verified users in early 2026. That mode is expected to offer fewer restrictions for users who confirm they are over 18.
Users who are incorrectly identified as minors will be able to restore full access by verifying their identity. OpenAI said this process will involve submitting a selfie through Persona, a third-party identity verification service.
The initiative reflects a broader trend across the tech industry, with platforms increasingly using automated age estimation tools to apply age-appropriate protections.
