An NAACP poll released on Friday reveals that over 25% of Black men under 50 would support Republican candidate Donald Trump in this year’s U.S. presidential election.
This marks a notable shift in a demographic that has traditionally shown strong allegiance to the Democratic Party.
During President Joe Biden’s tenure, some younger Black voters and Black men across age groups have expressed growing disenchantment with the Democrats.
Black voters were instrumental in Biden’s 2020 victory, and now Vice President Kamala Harris is working to maintain their support ahead of the November 5 election.
According to the recent survey, which polled 1,000 registered Black voters from August 6 to August 12, 63% of Black voters intend to support Harris, while only 13% favor Trump.
The survey highlights a generational divide: 26% of Black men under 50 support Trump, compared to 49% who back Harris. Conversely, among Black men over 50, Harris enjoys significantly stronger support, with 77% backing her.
Black women show even stronger support for Harris, with 67% in favor compared to just 8% supporting Trump.
Economic issues, including the cost of food, housing, and utilities, are top concerns for Black voters. The survey found that 82% of Black men under 50 consider economic issues the most pressing, compared to 75% of Black women of all ages.
The poll also indicates that messaging focused on threats to civil rights could be particularly effective in mobilizing undecided voters and younger Black men.
As the election approaches, understanding these dynamics will be crucial for both campaigns aiming to address the concerns and priorities of Black voters.
