Nuclear War
North Korea has issued a strong condemnation of the United States’ newly announced “Golden Dome” missile defense initiative, describing it as a dangerously provocative project that could escalate global tensions and potentially lead to nuclear conflict.
The rebuke came from Pyongyangโs Foreign Ministry via a statement published by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), which referred to the missile shield as a โvery dangerous threatening initiative.โ
The criticism follows U.S. President Donald Trumpโs recent announcement on May 20, in which he unveiled his administrationโs approval of the Golden Dome project and named a leader to spearhead the $175 billion defense programme.
Trump described the project as a cornerstone of national security strategy and a critical component of U.S. efforts to maintain global military superiority.
North Korea, however, sees the program in a starkly different light. The Institute for American Studies, a think tank within Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry, issued a scathing response, calling the Golden Dome โa typical product of ‘America First’ โ the height of self-righteousness, arrogance, high-handed and arbitrary practice.โ
The institute went further to label the initiative an โouter space nuclear war scenario,โ warning that such actions undermine global peace and stability.
The Golden Dome is envisioned as a vast satellite-based missile defense system composed of hundreds of orbiting units. These satellites would be equipped with cutting-edge sensors and missile interceptors, enabling them to detect and neutralize enemy projectiles in their initial phase after launch.
The system is explicitly intended to counter missile threats from adversaries like North Korea, Iran, China, and Russia.
China has also voiced its concern over the U.S. plan, with its Foreign Ministry last week declaring that it is โseriously concernedโ about the implications of the Golden Dome project.
Beijing has called on Washington to halt development, arguing that the initiative will upset the strategic balance and potentially trigger a new arms race in space.
North Koreaโs latest reaction adds to a growing chorus of international criticism and highlights the rising geopolitical tensions surrounding the militarization of space and missile defense strategies.
Pyongyang warned that the continuation of such projects would compel nations like itself to reconsider their own defense postures in order to maintain a strategic equilibrium.
