ISLAMABAD: The National Logistics Corporation (NLC) has achieved 97% completion of the Integrated Transit Trade Management System (ITTMS) at Torkham and Chaman border crossings, a major step toward enhancing Pakistan’s transit trade capacity and streamlining cross-border trade processes.
The inauguration of these state-of-the-art border terminals is scheduled for February 2025. This milestone positions Pakistan among nations with world-class border management systems, marking a significant leap in regional trade infrastructure.
Project Details and Funding
Funded by the Asian Development Bank and overseen by the Federal Board of Revenue, the ITTMS is being developed at two of Pakistan’s most critical border crossings. These modern terminals aim to significantly boost trade with Afghanistan, Central Asian states, and other regional partners, Express News reported.
Key Features and Benefits
The new terminals are designed to enhance trade volumes and foster socio-economic development. Beneficiaries include industrial sectors, exporters, importers, and local tribal communities. Once operational, the facilities will:
- Increase Trade Capacity: Handle up to 2,400 import and export trucks daily, a fivefold increase from current capacity.
- Expand Parking Facilities: Accommodate 400 trucks and 100 light vehicles at dedicated import and export yards.
- Integrate Advanced Systems: Combine traditional and computerized processes to expedite goods transportation.
Facilities and Infrastructure
The terminals feature modern administrative centers for various government agencies, including Customs, ANF, FIA, Border Rangers, Plant Protection, and Animal Quarantine officials. Additionally, a dedicated business hub will offer services for banks, internet providers, and clearing agents.
Offices for passenger movement and immigration-related tasks have also been established for agencies like FIA and Customs. To ensure security and efficiency, the terminals are equipped with:
- Gantry scanners and pass-through scanners.
- Under-vehicle scanners and weighing scales.
- Explosives and narcotics detection equipment.
- Biometric systems and luggage scanners for enhanced security protocols.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite numerous construction challenges, the NLC has persevered to deliver this nationally significant project. These terminals promise to not only revolutionize Pakistan’s trade infrastructure but also promote socio-economic development by facilitating seamless trade and connectivity with regional markets.
With the expected inauguration in early 2025, these terminals will usher in a new era of trade efficiency and regional integration.
