New Zealand has announced a spin-focused squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled in India and Sri Lanka from February 7. The Black Caps are aiming to exploit spin-friendly conditions in the subcontinent, particularly at Chennaiโs Chepauk Stadium.
Leadership and Spin Department
Captain Mitchell Santner will lead a 15-member squad featuring experienced spinners and versatile all-rounders. The spin line-up includes Ish Sodhi, Michael Bracewell, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra. Santner, a veteran all-rounder, has taken 130 wickets and scored 848 runs in 122 T20 matches, providing stability and leadership for the team.
Coach Rob Walter highlighted the value of experience in subcontinental conditions. He said, โThis is an experienced group, and the players are no strangers to playing in the sub-continent, which will be valuable.โ
Pace Attack and All-Round Options
New Zealandโs pace attack is led by debutant Jacob Duffy, alongside Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, and Adam Milne. Kyle Jamieson is included as pace cover, while James Neesham adds seam-bowling versatility. This mix ensures both attack depth and balance across formats.
Batting Strength and Squad Depth
The batting line-up features Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Tim Seifert, Devon Conway, and Daryl Mitchell. The squad combines firepower at the top with stability in the middle order, creating a well-rounded batting unit.
Several players face minor fitness concerns ahead of the tournament. Ferguson and Henry may take short-term paternity leave, while Santner, Chapman, and Allen recover from minor injuries. Milne and Neesham are included despite recent gaps in international play, ensuring squad depth in both batting and bowling.
T20 World Cup 2026 Fixtures
New Zealand is placed in Group D alongside Afghanistan, Canada, South Africa, and the UAE. The team will open its campaign against Afghanistan in Chennai on February 8.
Ahead of the World Cup, the Black Caps will play three ODIs and five T20Is against India. These matches will serve as preparation for subcontinental pitches and conditions, focusing on both spin and pace strategies.
