New York : New York City police said Sunday that a device ignited and thrown during protests outside Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s residence could have caused serious injury or death.
Authorities reported that the device, a jar packed with nuts, bolts and screws, was wrapped in black tape and fitted with a fuse. A counterprotester threw it Saturday outside Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s official residence. However, the device extinguished itself before detonating, according to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Police confirmed that officers took two people into custody following the incident. Investigators said protesters also threw a second device, which authorities continue to examine.
Protests escalate into dangerous confrontation
The incident unfolded during rival demonstrations outside Gracie Mansion. Far-right activist Jake Lang organized a protest against what he described as an Islamic “takeover” of New York City and against Muslim public prayers.
Meanwhile, a much larger counterprotest gathered nearby to oppose Lang’s demonstration. Police estimated that around 20 people joined the initial protest, while roughly 125 counterprotesters assembled to challenge it.
According to officials, 18-year-old Emir Balat, who attended the counterprotest, ignited and threw the first device. The object rolled close to police officers before the fuse burned out.
Shortly afterward, Balat allegedly lit a second device and dropped it in the street before attempting to flee.
Investigation continues as mayor condemns violence
Police arrested Balat at the scene along with another suspect, later identified as Ibrahim Kayumi. Authorities confirmed that both men remain in custody as the investigation continues.
Furthermore, the New York Police Department is coordinating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Department of Justice to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Mayor Mamdani condemned the violence in a statement Sunday. While criticizing the protest organized by Lang, he said the attempted use of an explosive device was far more alarming.
He stressed that violence at protests is unacceptable and described the act as criminal and reprehensible.
