Award Celebrates the Series’ Global Impact and Cultural Relevance
Netflix’s critically acclaimed drama Adolescence has officially secured the Golden Rose, the highest honour at the Rose d’Or Awards. The announcement highlights the series’ exceptional global influence and its ability to shape cultural conversations. Co-created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, the drama has achieved a record-breaking awards sweep this season.
The Golden Rose is reserved for programmes that go beyond standard genre expectations. It recognises productions that spark national and international discussion. Adolescence had already been nominated as a finalist in the Drama category at the 64th Rose d’Or Awards. The ceremony celebrates excellence, creativity, and innovation across global television.
This year’s victory places Adolescence alongside major past winners such as Chernobyl (2019) and the ITV documentary Storming the Capitol: The Inside Story (2021). The award cements the show’s status as one of Netflix’s most influential releases of the year.
Creators Praised for Emotional and Cultural Contribution
Mark Rowland, Chair of the Rose d’Or Awards, praised the series for its depth and social impact. He stated that Adolescence “exemplifies the values of the Golden Rose — outstanding storytelling that changes the way people think about a subject.” He further credited Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham for crafting a drama that resonates deeply with audiences worldwide.
Writer Jack Thorne is set to attend the awards ceremony in London on December 1, where the achievement will be formally celebrated.
Adolescence follows the story of a teenage boy accused of murder after being drawn into online “incel” culture. Its gripping narrative quickly gained worldwide attention. The drama averaged 45 million monthly views, making it essential viewing for families and educators concerned about online radicalisation.
The show also marked a historic milestone earlier this year. Owen Cooper, the 15-year-old star of the series, became the youngest-ever male Emmy winner. He earned the award for Best Supporting Actor for his powerful performance as Jamie Miller. Cooper received a standing ovation as he accepted the award from Sydney Sweeney, surpassing seasoned nominees like Javier Bardem.
With its emotional depth, cultural relevance, and strong performances, Adolescence continues to stand out as one of the most talked-about dramas of the year.
