Netflix has officially unveiled plans for a live-action Scooby-Doo series, marking the first time the beloved animated franchise will be adapted into a serialized format.
The eight-episode series will serve as an origin story, tracing how the iconic teenage detectives of Mystery Inc. first came together.
According to the official synopsis, the story follows Shaggy and Daphne during their final summer at camp, where they encounter a lost Great Dane puppy that may have witnessed a supernatural murder. Joined by Velma, a scientifically minded local, and Freddy, a mysterious newcomer, the group embarks on an eerie adventure that uncovers dark secrets.
Described by Netflix as a “modern reimagining” of the classic mystery-solving team, the show has yet to reveal its cast. The series is penned by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg under the Midnight Radio banner.
A Legacy of Mystery and Adventure
Since its debut in 1969 with Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, the franchise has been a cornerstone of pop culture. Created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, the original show followed Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and their talking Great Dane, Scooby-Doo, as they solved eerie mysteries—often exposing villains disguised as supernatural beings.
The franchise has since spawned numerous animated series, TV specials, direct-to-video films, and two live-action movies (Scooby-Doo in 2002 and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed in 2004), both featuring Matthew Lillard as Shaggy and Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne.
Unlike previous live-action adaptations that portrayed the fully formed Mystery Inc., Netflix’s take aims to offer a fresh perspective by exploring the origins of the legendary ghost-hunting team.
