ISLAMABAD: NEPRA fined the National Grid Company Rs50 million and CPPA Rs10 million. Both organisations have been ordered to pay the fine within 15 days.
NEPRA noted that the actual average fuel cost in January 2024 was Rs14.60 per unit. CPPA had requested an increase of Rs7.13 per unit under the monthly fuel adjustment.
Furthermore, the authority approved an increase of only Rs5 per unit and ordered an investigation into the unusually high hike.
Cheap Power Sources Ignored
A large amount of electricity was generated using expensive furnace oil and diesel as per NEPRA.
Moreover, the authority had issued a show-cause notice to CPPA asking for an explanation, but the agency failed to provide a satisfactory response.
This is the latest action by NEPRA to hold power sector entities accountable for poor planning and inefficient use of resources, which ultimately increases the burden on electricity consumers.
