India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Diamond League competition scheduled for August 16 in Poland. This announcement adds to the absence of Pakistan’s Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem, who was already expected to miss the Silesia Diamond League meet due to recovery from recent calf surgery.
The meet had been eagerly awaited by athletics fans worldwide, as it was set to host the first highly anticipated showdown between Chopra and Nadeem since their memorable face-off at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
At that event, Nadeem clinched the gold medal while Chopra took the silver, marking a historic moment for both athletes and their respective countries. Organizers had even teased the potential rematch earlier in July, raising expectations for a thrilling competition.
While Nadeem’s withdrawal was confirmed last month following surgery on his right calf in London, Chopra’s decision to pull out came as a surprise. Unlike Nadeem, Chopra has not publicly disclosed any official reason for his withdrawal. This unexpected development leaves many fans wondering about his current fitness or strategic preparations.
Despite this, Chopra has had an impressive 2025 season so far. He started the year strong with a victory at the Potch Invitational in South Africa. He then made history at the Doha Diamond League by becoming the first Indian javelin thrower to cross the 90-meter mark, setting a new national record with a throw of 90.23 meters.
Along the way, he secured podium finishes at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial and won several prestigious events, including the Paris Diamond League, Ostrava Golden Spike, and the NC Classic held in India.
With both Chopra and Nadeem sitting out the Poland meet, attention now shifts to their preparations for the upcoming World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo next month.
At the previous World Championships in Budapest, Chopra secured gold, finishing ahead of Nadeem. The Lausanne Diamond League on August 20 remains the last major competition before the Tokyo event, and both athletes were initially expected to participate.
Their fans will now closely watch to see if Chopra and Nadeem return to form at Lausanne and how they perform in the much-anticipated World Championships showdown in Tokyo.
