ISLAMABAD: The federal government has rescheduled the meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) to June 5, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif set to chair the session. The meeting was previously slated for June 9, just a day before the presentation of the federal budget for 2025–26.
The NEC, the apex body responsible for approving Pakistan’s economic framework, will finalize the key components of the upcoming budget, including macroeconomic targets, the National Development Plan, and the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP). The council will also set growth objectives for the agriculture, industry, and services sectors.
Provincial representation will be strong in the meeting, with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Sindh CM Syed Murad Ali Shah, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa CM Ali Amin Gandapur, and Balochistan CM Sarfaraz Bugti expected to attend. Their presence aims to ensure a unified national approach to economic planning.
Federal members of the NEC include Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, and Planning and Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal.
Meanwhile, Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Shehzad has confirmed that the federal budget for the fiscal year 2025–26 will be presented on June 10, 2025. He added that the Pakistan Economic Survey 2024–25 — which outlines the country’s economic performance over the past year — will be released on June 9.
“As communicated earlier, the upcoming Federal Budget FY26 is on schedule to be announced on June 10, 2025. Similarly, the upcoming Pakistan Economic Survey FY25 is scheduled to be announced on June 9, 2025,” Shehzad wrote in a post on X.
The federal government is expected to allocate over one trillion rupees for development spending in the 2025–26 budget, reflecting its focus on infrastructure and growth-driven initiatives.
