ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning for potential Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, amid rising temperatures and an approaching wet weather spell.
According to the NDMAโs National Emergencies Operation Centre, prolonged heatwaves are accelerating glacier melt, raising the risk of sudden flooding in vulnerable mountainous regions.
A significant wet spell is forecast to affect the region from the evening of June 26 to July 1. During this period, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is expected to experience scattered to widespread rain and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy downpours. Gilgit-Baltistan will also see rain and thunderstorms at multiple locations.
The NDMA advisory warns that the combination of high temperatures, intense rainfall, and active westerly waves may trigger GLOFs and flash floods in glaciated areas, urging local authorities and residents to remain vigilant.
