ISLAMABAD: The National Cyber Crimes Investigation Authority (NCCIA) has issued a warning about fraudulent โNew Year greeting linksโ circulating online, urging users to exercise caution to avoid financial and data-related losses. Authorities said cyber criminals are increasingly using the festive season to trick users into clicking on malicious links disguised as greeting cards or gifts.
Fake Links Pose Cybersecurity Threats
The NCCIA advised the public not to click on unknown links or share WhatsApp verification codes with anyone. Officials stressed that users should remain vigilant during celebrations to prevent hackers from exploiting personal information. Cybersecurity experts explained that fraudsters are sending New Year greeting messages containing malware through WhatsApp. The messages often encourage recipients to click a link to access a card, but doing so could compromise devices and personal data.
Experts highlighted that such links can allow cyber criminals to access sensitive information, including photographs, contact numbers, bank account details, and other private data stored on mobile devices. They urged users to ignore unsolicited messages, even if they appear to come from friends or family, as fraudsters can easily spoof contacts to make the links seem legitimate.
Public Advised to Stay Alert
Authorities emphasized that vigilance is the best defense against cyber fraud. Users are encouraged to verify sources before opening links and to avoid downloading apps or files from untrusted sources. The NCCIA also reminded the public that celebrating safely includes protecting digital devices from potential threats.
By staying alert and following basic cybersecurity practices, users can enjoy the New Year festivities without falling victim to online scams. Officials urged everyone to share the advisory with friends and family to raise awareness and prevent further incidents.
