In an ongoing nationwide campaign against electricity theft, authorities have recovered over Rs152.5 billion since the initiative began on September 1, 2023. The drive, part of the government’s broader efforts to address Pakistan’s energy crisis, has led to the registration of 314,814 cases and the arrest of 116,585 individuals involved in power theft across the country.
In the past week alone, more than Rs28 million was recovered, with 97 arrests made and 1,507 fresh cases filed. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining the campaign until power theft is completely eradicated.
The anti-theft operation is a key element of the government’s strategy to stabilize the power sector and promote economic recovery. By reducing losses in the system and enhancing revenue collection for power distribution companies, these efforts aim to ease the financial burden on law-abiding consumers and address long-standing inefficiencies.
Electricity theft has been a major factor in the country’s circular debt and inconsistent power supply. Through this campaign, authorities seek to build a more reliable and efficient energy system capable of supporting Pakistanโs economic growth.
The operation incorporates a range of tactics, including technical surveillance, on-site inspections, and legal enforcement to detect and penalize unauthorized connections and meter tampering.
Officials stated that the recovered funds will be reinvested into the power sector to enhance infrastructure and service delivery, offering a path toward long-term improvements in the countryโs electricity network.
