ISLAMABAD: Lt Gen (Retd) Sajjad Ghani has resigned from his position as Chairman of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), citing personal reasons. His resignation has been submitted to the Cabinet Division for formal approval on the directive of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
In an official statement, the prime minister expressed appreciation for Ghani’s contributions to the country’s water and energy infrastructure, acknowledging his role in advancing key development projects. He also extended his best wishes to the outgoing chairman for his future endeavors.
Appointed as WAPDA’s 23rd chairman in mid-2022, Ghani brought a rare combination of military leadership and technical expertise to the role. A graduate of the Military College of Engineering, he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1984 and later completed a Master’s in Civil Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore.
His dual background as a senior military officer and a professional civil engineer positioned him uniquely to oversee some of Pakistan’s most complex infrastructure initiatives.
During his military career, Ghani held several high-ranking positions, including Corps Commander Karachi, Vice Chief of General Staff at GHQ, Commander of the Corps of Engineers, and Quartermaster General — a role in which he managed large-scale logistics and construction operations for the armed forces.
His tenure at WAPDA was marked by efforts to accelerate hydropower and water management projects aimed at addressing Pakistan’s growing energy and water needs.
