US-Pakistan Law Enforcement Dialogue Scheduled for October

Law Enforcement Dialogue

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the United States have agreed to hold a joint “Law Enforcement Dialogue” in October this year.

This agreement was reached during a meeting between US Ambassador in Islamabad, Donald Blome, and Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi.

The discussions centered on mutual interests and the strengthening of bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of combating terrorism and narcotics trafficking.

During the meeting, both sides focused on measures to enhance cooperation in these critical areas and on ways to bolster security.

Interior Minister Naqvi emphasized the importance of US support in strengthening Pakistan’s law enforcement agencies. He highlighted recent discussions held in New York aimed at promoting collaboration between the police forces of Islamabad and New York City.

The dialogue between Naqvi and Blome also included discussions on the upcoming visit of a delegation from Islamabad police to New York. This visit is intended to explore opportunities for cooperation, including the organization of training programs.

Naqvi reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting all minorities, emphasizing that the Constitution safeguards their fundamental rights.

He mentioned that all individuals suspected of involvement in the recent Jaranwala incident had been arrested and brought before a court.

The meeting also touched on the successful hosting of the T20 World Cup in the US, which showcased the country’s emergence as a hub for international cricket.

The interior minister informed the ambassador about his efforts to organize a tri-nation cricket series involving Pakistan, the US, and Canada, as well as a cricket league between the US and Canada. Ambassador Blome expressed satisfaction with the organization of the World Cup.

Key officials, including Interior Secretary Khurram Ali Agha, Islamabad’s Chief Commissioner Mohammad Ali Randhawa, and police chief Ali Nasir Rizvi, were present at the meeting.

In May, the US State Department’s Coordinator for Counterterrorism, Elizabeth Richard, and Pakistan’s Additional Foreign Secretary for the UN, Syed Haider Shah, co-chaired the US-Pakistan Counterterrorism Dialogue.

In a joint statement, both countries acknowledged that a partnership to counter ISIS-Khorasan, the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and other terrorist organizations would enhance regional security and serve as a model for bilateral and regional cooperation in addressing transnational terrorism threats.

They resolved to increase communication and continue collaboration to detect and deter violent extremism through comprehensive, whole-of-government approaches.
