Traffic Accidents Surge in Karachi in 2025, Claiming 108 Lives

ISLAMABAD: Traffic accidents have sharply increased in Karachi in 2025, leading to 108 fatalities, including 72 in urban areas and 24 in the suburbs, with dumper truck-related crashes on the rise.

In a separate incident, a freight train collided with a trailer near Mai Kolachi, followed by an oil tanker crashing into them. The collision trapped the oil tanker’s driver, but rescue teams successfully freed him after intensive efforts.

The accident severely disrupted traffic, especially on Mai Kolachi Road. While some routes were reopened, others remain closed as authorities continue efforts to remove the wreckage. Traffic is being diverted to alternate routes.

Additionally, a tragic incident in Malir’s Memon Goth led to a fatality. Initially blamed on a dumper truck, investigations revealed no such involvement, with the identity of the deceased still unknown.

Govt Takes Action on Road Safety

Sindh’s Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon addressed the media on actions being taken by the provincial government to curb road accidents. Measures include mandatory fitness certification for all heavy vehicles, barcode systems for water tankers, and revised operational hours for dumper trucks to improve public safety. A 30-day grace period has been given to vehicles to obtain necessary certifications. Memon stressed collective responsibility, pointing to careless drivers, traffic law violators, and the government’s role in ensuring road safety.
