Task Force concludes discussions with majority of IPPs, informs NA body

ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, the National Assembly’s standing committee on power discussed the mechanisms for determining lifeline and protected consumers.

During the session, PTI MNA Sher Ali Arbab expressed dissatisfaction over the absence of Chairman NEPRA, Waseem Mukhtar, who was replaced by a junior officer to represent the regulator.

The Secretary of the Power Division clarified that the committee had not summoned the NEPRA chairman, stating that all necessary information had been provided in writing.

He added, “If the committee wishes, it can invite the chairman of NEPRA for the next session.”

A NEPRA official assured the committee that all details regarding the government’s contracts with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) had been shared.

However, PPP’s Khursheed Junejo stressed the importance of the chairman’s presence, labeling it a crucial issue concerning the IPPs.

In response, the Secretary of the Power Division highlighted that a Task Force had been actively engaged in discussions with the IPPs.

PML-N’s Ameer Muqam suggested it would be more beneficial to receive a briefing after the Task Force completes its report on the IPPs.

The Secretary further informed the committee that significant progress had been made, with negotiations concluded with most of the IPPs. This development indicates a step forward in addressing ongoing issues within the power sector, particularly concerning the roles and responsibilities of the IPPs and the regulatory framework governing them.

The session underscored the committee’s commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in the power sector, with future discussions anticipated to involve NEPRA’s leadership for a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced.
